LASER GUM CONTOURING LONDON

TEETH CONTOURING: WHAT IS IT?

It involves slightly cutting or altering the incisal tips of the upper or lower front teeth to reshape them. It is a quick, expertly performed procedure that can be completed concurrently with your consultation. Therefore, if your dentist knows what needs to be done and has some experience doing it, you can change your smile almost instantly.

DOES TEETH CONTOURS HURT?

No. It shouldn't hurt. Should you experience pain or a strong sensation during the procedure, it's possible that too much of the tooth is being removed. So, there won't be any pain at all as long as the approach is measured and sensible.

HOW MUCH SAFELY CAN TOOTH CONTOURING BE DONE?

The amount of teeth that can be extracted during the reshaping process has a limit. While the precise amount varies from tooth to tooth, it is typically between 0.5 and 1.0 mm. It occasionally could take a little bit longer before the tooth becomes sensitive. You could argue that this is insignificant and that little adjustments like this don't matter! But keep in mind that, when it comes to dentistry, even a millimetre can have a significant impact on how teeth appear. Having treated hundreds of patients, our team at Piccadilly Dental have firsthand knowledge of this.

CAN I CONTOUR THE SURFACE OF THE TOOTH TO CHANGE THEIR SHAPE?

The majority of the adjustments are typically made to the tips of the teeth in order to smooth out jagged edges, remove small chips, make the teeth less pointed, shorten some teeth, and level the teeth. The surface of the teeth may occasionally be slightly adjusted, but these are typically minor changes.

CAN I CONTOUR MY TEETH TO ALIGN THEM MORE?

The answer is actually no, unless the problem is with extremely small amounts. In these situations, orthodontic treatment like Invisalign or, in certain cases, dental veneers, would be a more suitable option for teeth alignment.

WHEN TEETH CONTOURING IS NOT RECOMMENDED, WHAT ARE THE OTHER OPTIONS?

There aren't many other options; it all depends on the patient's primary concern and desired outcome. In light of this, veneers or orthodontic treatment may be the better alternative to teeth contouring, depending on which option would be best. When teeth appear excessively long, orthodontic treatment can intrude on them to make them appear shorter. If necessary, it can also straighten the teeth. Veneers, such as composite veneers, are typically the least invasive option. They can be used to rebuild teeth that have significant fractures or sharp edges that cannot be smoothed with contouring alone.
